It’s déjà vu all over again: planning approval granted for this Hampshire bungalow extension.
When the first application was refused and went to appeal, we submitted a fallback scheme: matching materials and a pitched roof, albeit with a gable end facing the garden. Last week this was approved.
Now my clients have two approved schemes to choose from – the original timber-clad design (granted on appeal in October) and this second version.
Both have their own merits and opportunities. The original was initially refused due to concerns about scale and differing materials, despite being well-designed and contextually appropriate. The fallback addresses those concerns through more traditional forms while maintaining the spatial improvements they need (actually it’s slightly bigger in both footprint and height than the original scheme…).
It’s a good example of planning strategy in action: having a fallback option meant we could keep the project moving while the appeal was determined. Now we’re reviewing both designs with fresh eyes to decide which best serves the family’s needs.
