This architectural intervention revitalises a mid-20th century bungalow through a carefully considered single-storey rear extension and garage conversion. The project creates a contemporary timber-clad addition that honours the existing dwelling’s character while establishing a stronger dialogue between interior living spaces and garden.
The extension’s signature element is a beautifully crafted oriel window that acts as the project’s architectural heart. This projecting bay creates a distinctive threshold moment, capturing and directing natural light while framing carefully curated garden views. The result is a space that exists simultaneously inside and outside – a room within a room that transforms the experience of domestic life.
The existing garage conversion operates through subtlety rather than statement. Transformed into a productive home office, the intervention preserves the building’s original external character through minimal alterations.
Together, these modifications demonstrate Mountain Fold Architecture’s philosophy of surgical precision in residential adaptation – identifying exactly where intervention adds value while respecting the qualities that make buildings loved.
It was submitted for planning permission in late-2024.
